A Baylor College of Medicine video: Saving the lives of mothers in The Gambia

In the heart of The Gambia, Kanifing General Hospital serves a vast community of over 600,000 people. For years, limited surgical space and staff shortages meant mothers faced dangerous delays during childbirth emergencies.

Since 2020, the Gambia Safe Labor and Delivery Project has worked to reduce maternal and infant mortality. Through a strong partnership with the Mendenhall Foundation, Horizons Trust, and the Gambia Ministry of Health, Baylor College of Medicine designed modular Smart Pods to bring modern, mobile surgical facilities directly to where they are needed most.

Combined with training and empowerment of local healthcare workers, this initiative is transforming maternal care, saving lives, and offering hope for healthier futures across The Gambia.
