We recently sat down with the Smart PODs operating theatre team to hear how things are going. The Smart PODs are now fully operational, and KGH has a dedicated maternity theatre as part of the Safer Delivery Project delivered in partnership with HTG and Baylor College of Medicine.
What stood out most during our conversation was this: when a project is built around the right outcome, everything else begins to align.
We set out with one clear goal — to ensure safer deliveries for mothers and babies. What we hadn’t anticipated was how achieving that goal would naturally resolve so many underlying challenges. By improving the conditions for safe care, staff morale has risen dramatically — and that, in turn, reinforces and strengthens the very outcomes we are aiming for.
The team shared some eye-opening changes:
- No more delays — surgeries start on time because surgeons look forward to working in a space where the tools are ready and the team is efficient.
- With a dedicated theatre for maternity, there is no queuing for access with the rest of the hospital departments in the main theatre.
- Stronger teamwork — everyone knows their role, takes ownership, and feels excited to contribute.
- Lower stress levels — with resources in place, staff no longer feel overwhelmed. Instead, they have the time and energy to warmly engage with mothers, explaining the process and providing reassurance.
- A positive environment — the cool, well-equipped space itself reduces stress and lifts morale.
Their enthusiasm and pride were palpable. It was clear that this initiative has not only improved outcomes for patients but has also made staff feel truly valued, appreciated, and worth investing in.
We know that reducing delays is critical for maternal survival — and seeing how everything now flows seamlessly is a testament to the power of combining the right infrastructure with a motivated team.
